When Lightning Hit The El Camino

about

This is my twentieth recorded project created in my home studio. Just like the equipment and technology in my studio my music has been constantly growing, expanding, and changing with each passing year. I have gone from a practicing musician to an evolving producer and engineer and I can honestly say I don’t know which role I love the most I simply know I’m very fortunate and blessed to have the opportunity to exercise both aspects and to create music.

Saints & Angels of the Electric Blues Church came about through my guitar practice sessions, which I try to have five days a week in the evenings without fail. Although I love Power Pop Rock I have practiced my instrument to blues music nearly my entire life. From Big Joe Turner to Rick Derringer and every kind of electric blues in-between, I have used this type of music as the backdrop to drill my scales and develop my technique such as it is. Along the way I have written a few blues based songs with some Texas swing thrown in for good measure and this is the project I decided to showcase some of that material on.

There is no need to examine these songs or for me to offer any in-depth analysis about them because they are exactly what they are – Fun! I had a lot of fun writing them and even more fun recording them. Most important to me this is the first project I’ve generated where I could stretch out on my primary instrument, the guitar, and allow it to take the lead role in the structure and execution of the music.

When Lightning Hit The El Camino
©Jerry Axson

Heading to the state line,
taking all the back roads,
shifter in the middle –
I’m carrying a heavy load,
Desert moon is out –
She’s big and mean,
I can see her fingertips,
brush the pine top greens –

Money in the trunk and a fool at the wheel –
this dog’s gonna’ run if this dog’s gonna’ steal,
spending all my time at the Indian Casino,
I swear I wasn’t there when lightning hit the El Camino…

My friends disowned me,
when the Law took a crack,
at the Cherokee nation –
who wants their money back,
Harvest moon is out -
She’s hungry and lean,
her greedy fingertips,
wiped the cash vaults clean –

Money in the trunk and a fool at the wheel –
this dog’s gonna’ run if this dog’s gonna’ steal,
spent a lot of time at the Indian Casino,
I swear I wasn’t there when lightning hit the El Camino…

“Happy Camper” trailer park –
is just another dump,
there’s a storm on the brew,
the monies in the trunk,
thunderbolts are rolling –
cross’ the clouds overhead,
I got a war party knocking,
and I’m better off dead –

Money in the trunk and a tank full of gas –
it was the perfect plan – a simple “grab and stash”,
when the flash hit the cap they saw it all the way to Reno,
but I swear I wasn’t there when lightning hit the El Camino…

What a mess…
that thing went up like a fireball…
all that paper money…
done burned to ashes…

about

Jerry Axson Columbia, South Carolina

To me simplicity is the root of all great thoughts. The secret thrill for me, the architect, is delivering that thought with unobtrusive complexity. Writing songs and composing music satisfy my soul and because of this I know exactly what I am designed to do, it’s just that simple. - Jerry Axson ... more
