Theresa 03:59
Theresa ©Jerry Axson Half my heart is in this, the other half is gone, out that door and down the road, it’s been a month of Sundays since we – sat down and talked about it, you shouldn’t have to carry such a heavy load, Oh, Theresa would you believe me – if I looked you in the eyes and I lied? just one more man who deceived you - one more reason to break down and cry… Summer went too fast, we never heard the rain, beating down on the world outside, your Father swore to God he’d kill me – your Mother cried it’s done, and still you’ll carry me inside, Oh, Theresa please believe me – you deserve a better man than I, distant voices are whispering in my ear now - but I don’t want to tell you goodbye… no, I don’t want to tell you goodbye… no, I don’t want to tell you goodbye… no, I don’t want to tell you goodbye… no, I don’t want to tell you goodbye… never tell you goodbye… never tell you goodbye… goodbye…

How Do I Look ©Jerry Axson It’s early in the AM She pulls herself together facing down another day her heart light as a feather when I think about her life and the courage it took then she turns around to ask me – how do I look? All this time we’ve been together she still amazes me the simple fact it matters to her that I still like what I see no other man in this world holds that page in her book when she turns around to ask me - how do I look? She could have had anyone she wanted… but then I stumbled into her life… She could have said no but she chose mercy – the day I asked her to be my wife… I’m gonna’ do all that I can, to prove my love for her, every day for the rest of my life, that’s what she deserves, and I can’t wait to see this through, to the last page in our book, so I can turn around and ask her – how did we look?

Sitting On Red (Waiting For Green) ©Jerry Axson She was born the only girl in a house full of crazy boys, never did the “FuFu” thing she liked those rough-house toys, Four wheel drive on a wet clay road, double action or a single load, She was sitting on red waiting for green… Sitting on red waiting for green, she likes a little danger with some caution in-between, she’s Daddy’s little baby girl, Momma’s precious, perfect pearl, she’s sitting on red waiting for green… I grew up just down the road, I was a neighborhood kid, stayed in a lot of trouble and got away with a lot more I did, about the time that I noticed her, she stole my heart and the rest was a blur. I was sitting on red waiting for green… Sitting on red waiting for green, I like a little danger with some caution in-between, I was Daddy’s little baby boy, Momma’s precious bundle of joy, I was sitting on red waiting for green… And my oh my time flew by – we could almost reach out and touch the sky, we’ve been the best of friends and good company, I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be… Than sitting on red waiting for green, we liked a little danger with some caution in-between you’ll always be my only girl, we’ll have each other til’ the end of this world, we’ll be sitting on red waiting for green… we’ll be sitting on red waiting for green…

When Boogie Danced ©Jerry Axson When Boogie danced – he owned the floor, there weren’t no better, from shore to shore, they sang his praise – to the Heaven’s on high, a living legend, no one could deny… He danced the “two-step”, the “Electric slide”, up and down that seaboard – on the Eastern side, he shook the paint, off them window sills, that ain’t too bad, coming from “saw-mill hill”… And Oh - what a tangled web we weave, when even poor white trash start to believe… He met a woman, she was a wild eyed rose, she loved to Boogie – from his head to his toes, and just like a rose, she had her some thorns, and poor ole’ Boogie, wished he was never born… She lost her mind, and he lost a leg, now no more Boogie, he just lays in bed, and dreams of a time, when he took the floor, but Boogie B., he don’t dance no more… And Oh, Oh, Oh - what a tangled web we weave, when even poor white trash start to believe…like you and me…

The Battle Of Secessionville (James and Alexander Campbell) ©Jerry Axson I was astonished to hear you were there, when they attacked our Pointe yesterday, as soon as I heard I searched for you, but a prisoner told me you were safe, I did all I could to beat you, I'm sure you gave your all against me, I hope we never meet face to face, such bitter enemies, My blood, my flesh, my brother, when we charge up those green hills we will cry the cry of war - at the Battle of Secessionville we are our fathers’ sons, and we are our mothers’ tears, we are our brother’s keeper - so keep these letters near... I am my brother’s keeper - I will keep your letters near... They’ve sent the wounded to Hilton Head, I pray they go home soon, there are more dead than living here, and the sun burns hot by noon, I hope we both get through this, somehow alive and well, then I will have my story - and you will have yours to tell My blood, my flesh, my brother, when we charge up those green hills we will cry the cry of war - at the Battle of Secessionville we are our fathers’ sons, and we are our mothers’ tears, we are our brother’s keeper - so keep these letters near... I am my brother’s keeper - I will keep your letters near...

Zachary Cotton Cooper ©Jerry Axson Zachary Cotton Cooper, grew up in my hometown, he came up hard and alone, his folks were never around, DUI at 16, locked up at 22, his first real taste of anger in there, they beat him black and blue, Sometimes it’s hard to remember, was it August or September?, the month Zachary Cooper, well he just - he laid down and died, you can call it highway robbery, but I believe when his soul was set free, not a prayer was offered up, and every eye in this town went dry… Zachary Cotton Cooper, was no one’s confidant, his eyes were wild with rage, his soul cried out in want, the woman he took for his wife, the children they conceived, she took her own life for freedom, the kids chose nothing in which to believe, Zachary Cotton Cooper… he died alone… the only thing I can say - he was cold to the bone… Zachary Cotton Cooper… was no man’s friend… that aint’ no way to live - and it’s sure no way to end…

Celina, She Smiled ©Jerry Axson Far away in Canaan county, down a yellow sand road, where twig sticks raise up doodle bugs, and strip down my heavy load, there’s a memory of a girl there, someone I used to know, I’ve not spoken her name in years now, I’m the only one who knows, Celina, she smiled – and the sky turned deep blue, Celina, she smiled – and I believed it all came true, every wish we ever wished for… every hope we ever had… Celina, she smiled – and chased away the bad… Wooden porches in the summer time, old rusted chairs - green and white, you children best play quiet there, he’s in the bottle tonight, we weren’t rich but we weren’t poor, didn’t know and did not care, we were growing up together, in the middle of nowhere, All that time we thought we had to make life better for us slowly faded before our eyes and settled down in the dust caught between the suns last rays and the darkness moving in we lost each other in the night and we’ll never get it back again… no, we’ll never get it back again… no, we’ll never get it back again… no, we’ll never get it back again… no, we’ll never get it back again…

about

I believe a great songwriter can write in many different genres, it’s a mixture of loving and respecting all types of music and disciplining yourself to work outside of your comfort zone. When I started working on this project I decided it would be in a country/pop/southern rock style and not Rock or Power Pop. To accomplish this I forced myself to write and construct the material on acoustic guitar and not the electric guitar. Immediately this put me in a mindset to pick and chord completely different from approaching songwriting on the electric guitar. Once I wrote and recorded “Theresa” I knew I was moving in the right direction.
I pulled from a lot of personal experiences to write these songs. “How Do I Look” was written for my wife and simply put it’s an acknowledgement of both deep love and deep respect. “Sitting On Red (Waiting For Green)” is a story of childhood love that spans a lifetime, the object here was to wrap string arrangements around a simple acoustic progression and have the two elements support and compliment each other. “When Boogie Danced” was a slice of humor mounted on a train beat that could not be stopped – a lot of fun on this one. “The Battle Of Secessionville (James and Alexander Campbell) was a complete surprise for me, I happened to stumble across the story of these two brothers who fought against each other during the Civil war on opposite sides. Their story and legacy is built upon saved letters between the two during wartime and as I read their letters the verses wrote themselves to me, the chorus is my summation of their plight and it all came together under a beautiful arrangement of acoustic guitar and string ensemble. “Zachary Cotton Cooper” was technically the last song written for this project. Originally I was only going to record six songs in EP fashion but this song just poured out of me and once I put the music together for it I had to include it in this body of work. “Celina, She Smiled” closes out the set and although it is a long track it is a beautiful flowing track. Sometimes I just write and let the dice fall where they may. Besides, I will never have another opportunity to pen “Doodle Bugs” in a song lyric in my life – ever.

about

Jerry Axson Columbia, South Carolina

To me simplicity is the root of all great thoughts. The secret thrill for me, the architect, is delivering that thought with unobtrusive complexity. Writing songs and composing music satisfy my soul and because of this I know exactly what I am designed to do, it’s just that simple. - Jerry Axson ... more
