Not Willing Or Able ©Jerry Axson Seven days on the road, with no particular direction, guess I’ll keep moving Westward - Ho, I’m thinking maybe I’ll drive this car until I – Hit the ocean or I hit a bar – What keeps me moving forward, I don’t know… There’s so much more to you – than I could ever hope to see through, so I’ll just lay my pistols down on your table, When I came here I had something to say - but I ended up walking away, when I realized I was not willing or able… They told me you’ve been crying, over the things I did, it breaks my heart to picture you that way, I wouldn’t waste a tear on me, if I were you I’d just break free, and point that “motor-mascot” Westward-Ho…

I’ve Got The Sky ©Jerry Axson When I was a young boy I dreamed of flying away, nothing in this world could hold me back, make me stay, the sky was so wide, so endless and so very blue, like any wish I could ever make would always come true - like they sometimes do… I – want to get there faster, I – want to fly so high, Open the window and set me free now – I’ve - got the sky… With each passing year I kept my eyes on the sky, and life on this farm keeps rolling on but it won’t pass me by, the purple sage just touches down on the horizon out there, and I’ve got to get myself up and out if I’m going somewhere – somewhere out there…

Atomic Rocket ©Jerry Axson I want to speak but I don’t know what to say, every word from my mouth gets in the way, when she stands this close to me I get so confused, there’s something wrong when you can’t put your finger on a burning fuse – I love the girl with her hands in her back pockets – Yes! she loves the boy who’s ready to deploy like an a-tomic rocket… Long hair, soft eyes – Oh, Mother of Pearl, God bless the boy with the extraordinary girl, I want to see her in my automobile on a hot summer night, rain hits the hood and steam rises – it’s such a beautiful sight -

One Empty House (and Two Broken Hearts) ©Jerry Axson One empty house and two broken hearts, standing out on the lawn, looking through a lot of empty windows, wondering how it all went wrong, we used to run up that hill so fast, our dreams could not keep up, we were young, and strong, and brave, and free, we didn’t need no mean luck, and now it’s - One empty house and two broken hearts, standing out on the lawn, looking through a lot of empty windows, wondering how it all went wrong… I took a job and I worked real hard, everyday and sometimes through the night, you did the same and we saved up our money, to buy a slice of the pie, but the winter winds tore through the valley, and damn near froze us to death, now all we have is each other baby – I guess we’ll burn down the rest, One empty house… Oh, and two broken hearts… you put them together… you got a lot of broken parts…
5.
If Love Were Dollars (Then We’d Be Set) ©Jerry Axson If love were dollars then we’d be set – no looking over our shoulders and no regrets, there’d be a mountain of money stacked up under our bed, one hundred dollar bills where you lay your pretty head, a Mansion on the hill with matching “ski-jets” – if love were dollars then we’d be set… It would be easy money – a sure fire thing, we would stay red in the face but we’d roll in the green, I’d have the chauffer in the limo pickup all of our friends – we’ll party hard all night and then we’ll do it again, our extravagant lifestyle could solve the national debt – if love were dollars then we’d be set… If love were dollars then we’d be set – we got it all figured out but we aint there yet, the way we feel about each other would cancel every debt, if love were dollars then we’d be set… I’m sittin’ tall in the saddle while you’re swinging below, our little love generator keeps a steady cash flow, you know I got your back like I know you got mine, we’re a rags-to-riches story and it’s just about time, flying out to Vegas in our private Lear jet – if love were dollars then we’d be set…
6.
When Hope Gives Up (On You) ©Jerry Axson When hope gives up on you, don’t you despair, just turn yourself around, and I’ll be there, when darkness falls so heavy, you can’t see the light, take my hand baby – everything will be alright, Know that I love you – and I always will, even if the sky falls down, and the hands of time stand still, you’re not alone in this, and I promise I’ll come through, I won’t give up – when hope gives up on you… When hope gives up on you, and you cry in the night, fighting back those tears, with your eyes closed so tight, longing for arms to hold you, wanting for comforts sake, I would give everything I have, just to take you away -

The Old Ocean Highway ©Jerry Axson Had myself a Camaro – she was called the “Gray Ghost”, I drove her across to South Carolina, all the way from the West Coast, there I started a band, with some real good friends, yeah, we took it out on the old Ocean Highway, that’s where every story begins – Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na- we were learning to play… Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na- on the old Ocean Highway… Had myself a girl – she was my one desire, she held me so tight deep in the night, and she kissed me like fire, we grew up on that highway, more than a lifetime ago, and I would not change a thing if I could, because I know -

Train In Flame ©Jerry Axson Train in flame is a midnight run, when the wheels touch track they glow like the sun, fan those flames with heat and desire, you can run for the water but you can’t kill the fire, down the track and around the bend, she’s gone and she won’t be back again, you can fix your eyes on the distant line, your ears to the rail but there’s no more time, You’re a company man, Stan – with your attaché in your hand, so uptight you can not breath, is it any wonder she had to leave?, hopped this train for the midnight run – like you jump a dog or you jump a gun, took a seat in the very last car, you bought a ticket for as far as far – Train - in flame… Train – in flame… Train in flame is a midnight ride, where your apprehension sleeps by your side, til’ the morning sun creeps over those hills, and you knock it back down with liquor and pills, this Engineers got crazy eyes, no rhyme or reason will subsidize, this ride will come to it’s epic end, six thousand tons on the outside bend, I’m a company man, Stan – with my little heart in my hand, staring down at the shine on my shoes, tapping my heel to another man’s blues, I do not wonder why she left me here, and I will not live my life in fear, get this engine on down the line, I got places to go – I got people to shine,

about

This was a project I did upon request for a Nashville label rep. Growing up in South Carolina has given me a tremendous respect and love for true country music and I write and record my style or interpretation of country pop music. This particular rep had asked me to put together a small project of these types of songs for them to shop to labels so I did. What I enjoyed the most about doing this project was being forced to write in a particular style upon request, I think this was a very good exercise as a writer, composer, and producer and in the end I felt like I wrote a few good songs here - my favorites being "Not Willing Or Able" and "Train In Flame" which I owe to my brother Hal Axson because I could not have laid that Bass line down like he did and that made these two songs kick in my opinion. "I've Got The Sky" and "One Empty House (and Two Broken Hearts)" both lyrically poured out of me as fast as I could write them and I felt like the music/melodies for both turned out very solid and catchy. Most folks who heard this project as a whole came away liking "If Love Were Dollars (Then We'd Be Set)" simply because it's such a catchy, fun song - I had a lot of fun writing this one. "When Hope Gives Up On You" I wrote for my wife, it turned out to be a very personal and beautiful piece.

about

Jerry Axson Columbia, South Carolina

To me simplicity is the root of all great thoughts. The secret thrill for me, the architect, is delivering that thought with unobtrusive complexity. Writing songs and composing music satisfy my soul and because of this I know exactly what I am designed to do, it’s just that simple. - Jerry Axson ... more
