My Girlfriend Smiles (A Lot Like That) ©Jerry Axson Mona Lisa was shy – beyond a shadow of doubt, Lenny looked her in the eye yea, and they – they worked it all out, She was a keeper of secrets, she was a dreamer of dreams, that everyman has been chasing, from that moment it seems, My girlfriend smiles – a lot like that, when we get a little wild, and we slip through the cracks, so deep in the night where there’s no coming back, my girlfriend smiles – a lot like that… Bettie Page was a mess, and “Helen M” is a fact, “Candice B” to “Jackie O” – just to keep me on track, I’ll take them all for a ride, in my automobile, there’s only one by my side and she knows - just how I feel,

Sunday 03:20
Sunday ©Jerry Axson We talked about the weather, from an awkward point of view, in a crowded room of people, there was only me and you, I laughed a nervous laugh, as you looked into my eyes, I told you they were empty – you just smiled and said I lie… Stay until Sunday – it’s the kindest day of the week, we could sit and talk about Monday, as long as we don’t go deep, there’s coffee in the brewer, and I’ve set aside some time, so stay until Sunday – leave the rest of the week behind… I’m not looking for any answers, I’m not facing down some fear, I just want to get to know you, it’s been a long and lonely year, there’s a heartache on the air wave, and it drove me underground, if it had not been for this weather – look at what I might not have found…

Head Begs Heart ©Jerry Axson Oh, Oh, Oh – one thing I know, just because you say it – don’t make it so, and I believe – this very night, there will be a resolution, before the dawns first light, And Oh – my poor head – begging my heart, to just play dead, not one beat – until she’s gone, it’s the only chance I have, to carry on… Oh, Oh, Oh – it’s just no good, this love we have – we never could, build it up, for tearing it down, we’re the joke on every tongue, in our home town, And Oh – my poor head – begging my heart, to just play dead, not one beat – until she’s gone, it’s the only chance I have, to carry on… it’s the only chance I have, to carry on… it’s the only hope I have, to carry on…

Roxine 04:21
Roxine ©Jerry Axson Would you mind if I sat down next to you? I've got nowhere to go – I’ve got nothing to do, blue skies up above and all is good, it's a beautiful day in our neighborhood Roxine - Roxine - you're the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen, Roxine - Roxine - the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen... C’mon now…. Drinking pink lemonade in the afternoon, while your radio fades in and out of tune, the heat from the sidewalk runs up your legs don't make this poor boy fall down and beg - Roxine - Roxine - you're the prettiest girl I‘ve ever seen, Roxine - Roxine - the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen... C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, come now… Roxine - Roxine - you're the prettiest girl I‘ve ever seen, Roxine - Roxine - the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen...

Perfect Pop 04:01
Perfect Pop ©Jerry Axson Big clock on the wall goes – tick, tock, tick, tell me all about your heart, but you better make it quick, because I’m falling off the edge, I’m going over the top, when you whisper in my ear, give me that perfect pop… When I’m still and listen… I hear it in my head… she wraps me in her arms… and lays me down deep in her bed… the one good thing in my life… that I was meant to do… make this music for myself… and give it back to you… Big heart in my chest goes – boom, boom, boom, you took this kiss from me, are we arriving soon? you move me – yes, you do, unlike anyone I’ve ever known, I’ll let you near my fire, and show you what I’ve never shown…
6.
Worst Thing That Could Happen ©Jerry Axson Don’t you think I know the truth? don’t you think I know the score? you’re just messing with my chemicals, nothing less and nothing more, It’s a long way back from empathy, it’s a long way back to here, if you look into my eyes – you’ll see there’s almost someone there, I’m the worst thing that could happen, to the new you in your life, I’m the worst thing that could happen, and I’m happening tonight, stepping out from behind these curtains, stepping out into your light, it’s the worst thing that could happen, and it’s happening tonight… Baby drives me crazy, she’s a monster at the wheel, no, we never fall asleep in here – we just hurt ourselves to feel, so if you want a confession, if you want words from my mouth, you’d better get out of the way – before it all comes pouring out,

about

At the start of the summer I wrote and recorded “Head Begs Heart” and as I listened to it during mix down it occurred to me that it was a classic sounding “Power Pop” song with a bouncing melody and a catchy chorus which got me thinking maybe it’s time for a new Volume of my Pop Record Confidential series. To do this I had to immerse myself in a Power Pop frame of mind to begin the writing and composition process but anyone who knows me will tell you I am a disciple of Power Pop first and foremost so I am most comfortable creating that type of music. I could drop a hundred names here but some of my biggest influences range from The Beatles, The Producers, Baxter Robertson, The Babys, to lesser known names such as The Green Pajamas, The Plimsouls, The Shoes, and Sugar. There are just too many to mention.
Once I wrote and recorded “My Girlfriend Smiles” I knew I was off and running, that song became my benchmark to measure the rest of the material by. “Roxine” was a lot of fun to put together, I wanted something that projected that summer of discovery vibe where you noticed the girl next door for the first time in a very different and a very new way. “Sunday” came to me in a dream believe it or not, I don’t get those too often but this one was perfect and practically mapped out for me upon arrival. It was one of those things where I jumped out of bed and ran for pen and paper while it was still in my head. “Perfect Pop” was a title that I wrote a song around, my favorite part is the choir harmonies on the chorus, which I had never done before. The coolest surprise for me on this project had to be “Worst Thing That Could Happen”. This song wrote itself from start to end, it just flowed and I hung on for the ride. I love the changes in the soundscape as it marches forward to close out the EP making it a great closer for this project.

about

Jerry Axson Columbia, South Carolina

To me simplicity is the root of all great thoughts. The secret thrill for me, the architect, is delivering that thought with unobtrusive complexity. Writing songs and composing music satisfy my soul and because of this I know exactly what I am designed to do, it’s just that simple. - Jerry Axson ... more
