Hypoxia Blues

Hypoxia Blues

Standing in front of the supermarket payphone – a warm quarter in my hand,
rolling it over and over in my head and I still don’t understand,
why the trigger in my brain keeps clicking away but the pin never strikes a cap,
an impotent idea in an empty room makes me chew my leg from this trap,

I’ll get “high fives” later in the commissary lunchroom from “Rocket boys” ready for flight,
they’ll tell me I’m a hero while their eyes read zero – every muscle, every sinew drawn tight,
What do you expect when you dress like that?
Leopard spots and ballerina shoes –
The wolf’s at the door and there’s fire in the core,
I get these Hypoxia Blues…

I’m on my way -
but I don’t know where I’m going to…
I’m on my way –
no, I don’t know where I’m going to…

She wants to mend fences with persuasive pretenses - she tells me let’s talk today,
So I’m hanging on this payphone but I might as well be alone - she’s got nothing new to say,
A candy land operator comes on the line to tell me life’s a lemon with a sssudden twist –
I would tend to agree with her except everyone but me here has a gorilla in the mist,

There will be “Low-Fi” moments for the rest of my life when I look back and shake my head,
Instead of “up and moving” I was slowly “un-grooving” wading through the sea of the dead,
What do you expect when you dress like that?
Leopard spots and ballerina shoes –
The wolf’s at the door and there’s fire in the core,
I got those Hypoxia Blues…

about

Jerry Axson Columbia, South Carolina

To me simplicity is the root of all great thoughts. The secret thrill for me, the architect, is delivering that thought with unobtrusive complexity. Writing songs and composing music satisfy my soul and because of this I know exactly what I am designed to do, it’s just that simple. - Jerry Axson ... more
